Periods of Transition/Life Crisis

Times of transition speak to our ultimate concerns about life – that it is fragile and uncertain. At such times familiar horizons crumble, we are shaken to the core and our sense of self is shattered. Familiar ideals, concepts and emotional patterns no longer provide a coherent framework for living. One stands before a long dark tunnel of descent. The task is to allow the descent and to embrace the experience as a period of incubation that gives rise to a new understanding of life’s meaning. It is an ordeal of sacred disintegration that heals and transforms. Emergence from the tunnel is a rebirth, marked by a profound shift in consciousness and a restructuring of life’s focus. Top

Counseling...
For Men, Women, Couples and Adolescents.

In the mental health field the focus is on pathology and, therefore, on treatment models that attempt to treat through diagnostic labels. Methods that promote health, optimal functioning and the cultivation of positive qualities receive minimal emphasis. This limited approach to psychology offers little for the maintenance of a meaningful life. We are left poor of heart.

Personal wholeness and well-being are not necessarily achieved by an endless inquiry into our childhood or issues of self-esteem. While initially helpful to the healing process, at some point we must turn away from self-centered states of mind and begin cultivating our finer qualities. These qualities – sensitivity, courage, confidence, and compassion – are essential to personal happiness, to healthy relationships, and to the well-being of society. They bring peace, joy and give life its deepest meaning.

There is a Zen koan that says, “First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is a mountain”. Adult consciousness first develops with the formation of the ego, the first mountain. Its healthy functioning depends on the integration of personal experience so that life can be lived in accordance with personal hopes and goals. For many individuals, over time, this solid sense of self begins to erode as new questions about the meaning of one’s life emerge. Usually later in life there is a collapse of the ego (no mountain). Further development can lead to a revelation of our deepest passions and they, in turn, can support a journey of the spirit in which the ego, no longer pursuing selfish wants, begins to serve higher and more universal principles (another mountain).

An individual may enter therapy at any point in the psychological continuum. Both ego development and ego dissolution are processes extending over many years and are equally important. For some, the resolution of a specific issue is sufficient to insure a sense of well-being. For others, the goals are more complex. Techniques appropriate to one individual may not apply to another. Susan’s gift is her ability to discern where an individual is on their journey and which methods will serve an individual’s goals. She has expertise based on an integrated model of consciousness that draws upon humanistic, transpersonal and spiritual foundations.

Susan specializes in modalities that:

  • heal deep personal wounds and integrate traumatic experiences;
  • explore discontent, apathy and meaninglessness by reaching deeply into aspects of soul and spirit;
  • examine the origins of personal and collective suffering and provide a means of navigating life with integrity and skill;
  • shift dysfunctional systems into highly functional ones;
  • help couples and families develop effective communication styles that lead to a greater understanding of conflict, develop a larger container for individual differences and deepen understanding, respect and intimacy.
  • address addictions and compulsive behaviors in terms of one’s search for wholeness;
  • reach beyond pharmaceuticals in the treatment of mood disorders and depression to orthomolecular options, nutrition, and psychological or social factors such as chronic grief, chronic pain, despair or loneliness;
  • cultivate positive emotional states that promote a mature sense of love, forgiveness, courage, generosity and compassion.

Personal Retreats & Wilderness Intensive 5 -10 days...
Individual or Group
Couples and Families

Our lives have ascending and descending cycles. At critical times an individual may need solitude to explore one’s inner core without distraction. It is a time when deep caves can be mined and new treasures brought to light. With wise and intuitive guidance, a structure conducive to expansion and openness is created, an individual’s experience is contained within their psychic space, and it’s relevance and meaning is brought into clear focus.

Retreats are through private arrangement only. Time and place, as well as structure, are carefully planned based on the needs and personal inclinations of the individual(s).

Call 406-251-6698 for retreat planning and further information..
